What to Pack for Your First Fly-In Fishing Trip to Arctic Lodges

Sep 9, 2025 | Uncategorized

Your first trip to Arctic Lodges is one you’ll remember. Big fish, quiet mornings, and the kind of days that stick with you. To help you make the most of it, here’s a packing guide based on what we’ve seen work best over the years.

When you’re flying into the lodge, space is limited – so pack smart, stay organized, and bring what you’ll actually use.

Clothing: Dress for the Day, Layer by Layer

Weather changes fast out here. Layers are your best friend.

  • Base layers – Lightweight thermal top and bottom for early mornings or cooler days.
  • Mid layers – Fleece or wool sweaters give you warmth without the bulk.
  • Outer layers – Waterproof and windproof jacket and pants are a must. You’ll want something that can handle spray, rain, and wind.

Footwear & Accessories

Keep your feet dry and your hands warm. Comfort matters when you’re on the water all day.

  • Waterproof boots – Insulated if you’re coming early or late in the season.
  • Casual shoes or slip-ons – Good for around the lodge.
  • Warm gloves or mitts – Bring an extra pair just for handling fish.
  • Toque or warm hat – You’ll be glad you brought it on cold mornings.
  • Sun hat or ball cap – Sun protection goes a long way.
  • Buff or neck gaiter – Helps with both wind and sun.
  • Plenty of socks – Wool or synthetic. Pack extra—wet feet make for a long day.

Fishing Gear

We supply top-tier gear here at the lodge, but if you have favourites, feel free to bring them along.

  • Rods and reels – Medium-heavy spinning or baitcasting setups are great for pike, lake trout, and walleye.
  • Tackle box – Include your go-to spoons, jigs, soft plastics, leaders, and pliers.
  • Polarized sunglasses – They’ll help cut glare and spot fish under the surface.

Personal Items

Stay comfortable, covered, and ready for whatever the day brings.

Documents

  • Government-issued ID
  • Fishing license (available online or at the lodge)

Toiletries

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant
  • Sunscreen and lip balm with SPF
  • Bug spray (you’ll want something strong)
  • Prescription meds
  • Motion sickness or basic pain relief tablets

Other Useful Items

  • Small backpack for shore lunches or gear
  • Reusable water bottle
  • A few snacks for the plane ride
  • Camera or phone (plus a waterproof case)
  • Power bank to keep your phone or camera charged
  • A book or Kindle for downtime

Packing and Travel Tips

Luggage weight is limited. On our charter flights, pack efficiently—no oversized bags or unnecessary extras. Stick to soft-sided luggage where possible and leave fragile or valuable items at home unless necessary.

Weather Notes

Reindeer Lake weather can swing from cool and damp to sunny and hot in a single day. That’s why we recommend dressing in layers—you can add or shed gear as the day goes on without missing a beat.

What to Leave Behind

Skip the extras you won’t use:

  • Jewelry or valuables
  • Breakable items without solid protection
  • Heavy or duplicate gear (especially if you’re using ours)
